CeBIT 2007

In 2007, at CeBIT in Hanover, the world’s largest trade fair for information technology, Russia was the partner country. Under the motto “Work between Russia and Germany”, I hosted an exhibition booth with more than 100 participating companies and once again experienced that even a one-man company can stand up to large corporations like Microsoft and others – and be taken seriously.

As part of German-Russian cooperation in the information economy, Russia was presented as the partner country of BITKOM 2007. The aim of this collaboration was to draw the attention of the German ICT industry to the wide-ranging opportunities offered by the Russian market and cooperation with Russian companies and research organizations.

For me and my young company, it was a great honor to be mentioned in the same breath as major competitors and to prove: small businesses can achieve just as much as large corporations. What was important for me then – and still is today – is not to take pleasure in the failure of other companies, but to learn from their mistakes. At the same time, to keep an eye on successful companies in order to learn from them as well.

CeBIT 2010

Under the motto “Connected Worlds”, Spain was the partner country. In my business at that time, the main focus was on Joomla, a widely used open-source content management system (CMS) for creating websites. Joomla was presented at this trade fair for the very first time.

The spectrum of visitors ranged from beginners just getting into the subject, to users already successfully working with the system, all the way to professionals who were achieving real success with Joomla. The audience was highly international – in addition to many German developers, there were visitors from neighboring countries, as well as from the USA and Asia.

What was particularly interesting for me were the innovative conversations, which gave rise to numerous questions as well as solutions. These ranged from quickly solvable problems, for example those that could be fixed with a little CSS, to more in-depth questions about extensions and highly technical issues reaching deep into the system.

The good cooperation between developers and marketing became especially clear in the evenings after CeBIT closed its doors. People met for dinner to exchange experiences, analyze feedback, and engage in constructive discussion.
